Location:
1477 Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, California, 90026
Special Features: DJ, 21 & Over
Local band flyers and photocopied want ads greet customers walking through the angular entryway, which obstructs the goings-on inside from street view. Bud Light lampshades hang over tattered tan-vinyl booths up front. Two pool tables in the back are perpetually lined with quarters--don't be surprised if the eight or cue ball are missing. Cute bartenders serve reasonably priced drinks, but don't expect top-shelf liquor. Jukebox variety favors '80s new wave and '90s indie rock, and DJs often set up in the back corner, where they spin everything from Ella Fitzgerald to Siouxsie & the Banshees. Little more than a hole-in-the-wall, this unsuspecting venue has become a prime post-9pm destination for an unusual mix of the artsy, just-turned-21 set, longtime locals and gay and lesbian crowd.
Know Before You Go

The bar's name is painted on the side of the building, but it can be hard to read from the street. It's the northwest corner of Portia and Sunset.

Parking

Once notoriously limited, parking in the area has improved dramatically since the end of Short Stop's heyday.

Save Time

The bar doesn't accept credit cards--the nearest ATM is located at the 7-Eleven at 2200 Sunset Boulevard.

Cash only = annoying

Dirty and smelly, this place epitomizes hipsterness with it's actual filthiness. The cash only policy is what puts this bar at the bottom of my list for bars in this neighborhood. I know, I know, you're thinking but it's THE bar that the band Little Joy is named after, but honestly, celebrity cool vs real dirtiness and inconvenience is even too much for a lazy scumbag like me. And though I'm being a negative Nellie, I will say a few years ago I did have some nice times there but only after a trip to the ATM.

Dirty Birdy.

This place is definitely a dive. The kind of dive where you don't want to touch anything and if you do, you want to spill sanitizer all over your body. The dj is in a little hole in the wall (literally). Cash only. I like my dive bars like the Roost. Where it's a little dirty, but you don't feel like you'll catch anything by touching a chair.

Even so, I still find myself here from time to time.

Funny story:
One time my friends were playing the Echo and we bar hopped to Golds and to here. One of them ordered a Purple Hooter just because and they kicked him out. (It might have been him knocking the stools over and causing a drunken scene, but I think it was the Hooter that did it.) Pretty hilarious. Don't expect to order anything other than the basics here. Parking is what it is. Expect to park up a hill-this is Echo Park.

I Know, I Know...

The last thing you might wanna do at night is immerse yourself in a room full of skinny jean hipsters waxing ironically over their PBRs in an overly distressed bar setting. And yeah, when I put it that way, the Little Joy sounds Little Blah. Still, this is one of my favorite little holes in the wall. Am I being ironic by professing my love of broken bar stools or cheap and plentiful beer served in red Solo cups? It feels sincere to me. There's a weary weight-of-the-world look to the bar crew here, who shift between the on-the-dole crowd during the day and dad-still-pays-my-rent at night -- it makes for a good entrance to a long night of drinking, joking, pool playing, and dancing. All of which the Little Joy has in spades.

Dive of all dives

This place is so gritty and crusty. But that's why I like it so much. The walls are tagged, the people are greasy, and I feel like there is not a better bar. There's a pool table, but that's about as grand as the amenities get. The DJ section is a cut out hole in the wall (literally). At night, it's full of echo park's newest immigrants: the hipsters. During the day, I've been told the locals stop by for a drink after a long day's work (i.e. at Dodger Stadium). The transformation at night is the only crowd I've seen and it's a great group with interesting style.
