In Short
Dark wood and black leather benches rest against suede-tufted walls, while visuals come courtesy of Japanimation constantly streamed via 15 LCD monitors, a plasma TV and video projectors. Bay Area's famed chef Ritsu Tsuchida has ventured south, bringing such popular creations as his signature rice-less tempura-fried ritsu roll with tuna, avocado and tobiko. Other offerings include the innocuous namesake cousin of the poisonous Japanese tiger fugu and cooked dishes like teriyaki chicken.
What to Drink

The sake list is extensive and features a $220 bottle of sparkling rice wine on the high end, along with more affordable selections.

Where to Sit

For a more relaxed vibe, opt for a seat in the relatively quiet lounge area.

Weak trendy also-ran

My parents came to town, and they wanted to grab sushi. They also wanted to bring about 8 people to sushi, which kinda ruled out all the little hole in the walls I knew about...and I didn't really want to make my parents empty their wallets out all over the table. So I dug around, and made reservations at Blowfish. I'd heard it was popular, i figured it'd be safe.

I shoulda changed courses once I realized there were only 5 of us. With that number, we coulda hit something choice in Studio City/Sawtelle/Little Tokyo. Oh well, I thought it'd be fun to eat on the Strip too, so...

I don't mind the Sushi Roku/Katsuya brand of fusion sushi. Honestly, I've had some mighty tasty things off those menus and been really happy signing the $$$$ bill. Blowfish tries for that experience, with decor, presentation, and menufare...but it's just so poorly done that I could never recommend it. My folks liked the sorta tuna tartare/guacamole dip that we started off with...but I also know that's because they've never had anything like that back home. By the time we finished running through our initial offerings of weak spineless sushi, we were still hungry...but I didn't really wanna let my parents keep spending. I steered us out of there and into an awesome dessert joint, and I hope they never remember their LA sushi experience.
