The Scene
Matte black walls and a glass window stretch up to industrial ceiling fixtures, which lend a post-modern vertigo to this intimate space. The centerpiece is a stunning wood and zinc horseshoe bar that wraps around the kitchen and raw bar. Pre-theater and post-moviegoers of all ages have found this casual mall-enclosed spot perfect for a relaxed dinner, though the bar rocks a little harder later on.

The Food
Husband and wife team of chef David Lentz (Opaline, Campanile) and Suzanne Goin (Lucques, A.O.C.) proffer a sophisticated seafood menu inspired by dishes from the Maryland coast. For starters, American sturgeon caviar is accompanied by classic toast points, egg, onion and chive, and Hama Hama oysters are both sweet and briny. Crab cakes made from a 100-year-old family recipe bulge with lump crabmeat; other standout entrees include the robust clams doused in a deep, pungent tomato chorizo broth, and a meltingly sweet and tender pan-roasted skate wing.
The Extras

Indulge guilt free: American sturgeon caviar is environmentally sustainable, as the eggs are harvested (by caesarean!) and the fish left to live, swim and spawn again.

What to Drink

The wine list offers over 20 wines by the glass, and the bar whips up specialty cocktails with fresh seasonal juices, along with classics like dark and stormys.

Where to Sit

A charming courtyard patio in front is shaded by market umbrellas by day, and made toasty with heat lamps by night--it's great for larger groups.

Went here again last night...amazing burger!

I had a nice quiet dinner alone here last night and the burger was once again astounding, the staff friendly as always, and the drinks perfectly mixed!

Avant garde seafood in the heart of Hollywood

I met a friend of mine in town from New York here last night and had a great meal!

Parking: The parking situation is a bit strange--you have to enter on Sunset and drive down an alley to enter the garage.

Drinks/Apps: Had a great gin cocktail special with blood orange juice! I could barely taste the alcohol but it was a stiff drink..well mixed for sure. We got a great Dungeness crab appetizer--small slices of crab served on lettuce with an interesting ponzu-style sauce.

Main course: I got the Pacific Sea Bass on coriander rice with coconut milk. Very light and full of flavor--well cooked! She got the opakapaka (like red snapper) on a bed of clams and lamb bacon. A bit heavy for me but yummy!

Great raw bar better, better cocktails

The Hungry Cat is a solid haven in a part of Hollywood where it's tough to make a good meal happen. The raw bar selection is legit-- we had a big sampler the last time there-- good overall with the exception of the Dungeness crab which was partially frozen. The most stand out feature of all though is the house cocktails. Innovative blends, all fresh ingredients. I hate to be so new school but the house margarita is one of the best I've had in LA.

The best burger in LA?

Yes, I know this is a seafood place. And they have some really juicy plump shrimp and a stacked raw bar. But it's the pug burger that really make Hungry Cat so special. One meaty burger, covered in dripping blue cheese with the bacon so thick that it's almost a piggy steak on an English muffin. It's pricey ($16) but it's so worth it. Their drinks are great too. The bartender won best bartender in LA last year! I'm not sure who gave him the honor though.

I live right above The Hungry Cat so it's quite tempting to get a pug burger every day, but I manage to resist. During the weekend it can get pretty crowded for dinner. Even with some outdoor seating, the place is fairly small. But if you want a great burger or are in the mood for one of the few Hollywood seafood restaurants that has a quality selection of oysters and more, it's worth the wait and price.

Delicious and worth every penny

If you love fruits of the sea, this is the place to eat them in their most pristine state. Wonderfully fresh oysters, clams and uni (in season). Interesting ceviche too. Their menu changes quite often and it is always fabulous. They also pour really interesting specialty cocktails that are refreshing and not too sweet.
