It was a joke when it opened complete with The Hills "cast" members stalking the joint, and it still is. My buddy weaseled me into going to Area for New Year's because his friends were in town. I spend a freaking fortune, and had one of the lamest new year's ever. My other friend had such a crap time, he walked 4 miles home in the rain to get away from this place. With about a half hour left before the countdown, I tried to locate a single girl to make out with at the bell striking. I located a Canadian girl who had been "set up" kind of by her girlfriend with the girlfriend's toolbag boyfriend whom she had no interest in at all. I ended up making out with her for a bit. And around 1 am, she puked in her party hat and then tried to make out with me again! I politely rejected her and twenty minutes later as people were getting moved out, the toolbag guy came up to me and told me I was NOT going to take her home and take advantage of her, to which I responded, "I know. I made that decision. I don't want to." But in usual toolbag fashion, he proceeded to attack me.
Now, I'm a big guy, and generally when an altercation begins around me, the bouncers throw me out. But to their credit, they let me stay and tossed the toolbag. So that's the one plus: bouncers aren't idiots here.

Uggh! Area is annoying. I mean the decor is cool enough inside but not worth waiting in line for...In usual Hollywood fashion the drinks are way overpriced and the patrons tend to be on the, well, douchy side. Oh yeah and last time I went with two girl friends we had to wait and then their stupid credit card machine broke at the door so we were more than happy to take our business somewhere else.
Idiots!

Area is the 'hot club' of today, but it doesn't offer anything special or unique. If you want to wait online for 20-30 minutes, and get in to loud music and fight your way to the front of the bar to order your overpriced drink, and keep getting bumped into by the drunkards around you, then go for it. I only find this venue fun if it is a private event such as a network or film release party.

Last night, I went to Area (yes, I have been living under a rock) for the first time, after it was converted from Prey to see one of my favorite house DJs, Sharam, spin.
It was a great place to see him spin, as that it was very intimate, and I was about 5 feet away from Sharam. I managed to stake out a nice spot directly under an AC vent to dance, but had to leave after 30 minutes, b/c some huge drunk (or other extracurriculars) was flailing around, trying to dance. I think.
Anyway, I didn't drink (it was a school night!) but enjoyed Area as an intimate venue. It wasn't super packed at the back, near the women's restroom, although the line for the restroom started creeping out into the bar area by at least 15 deep, since they only have 4 stalls.
One thing that bit, was that valet cost $20 (minus tip)!!!! My ticket cost $24.00, including service charge. Not cool to rape me on valet, especially in this economy.
I give Area an A for an intimate value, but C+ for the valet fee, which equals to a B-.

this club is overated. Their staff is rude and they tend to let waaaay to many people in when they have events and you can hardly move.
