In Short
Nestled next to a laundromat in a nondescript strip mall, the unexpected hum of ambient music soothes an eclectic mix of patrons into the few low-back bar chairs and comfortable bench seating. An international wine list offers a two-ounce pours to full bottles, which accompany the mostly small plates-sized portions of pig candy (bacon coated in brown sugar), mushroom truffle crostini and artesian cheeses. Garlic salami and sausages are flown in from Armandino Batali's (Mario's father) Seattle meat factory.
Know Before You Go

Reservations aren't accepted, so arrive early on weekend nights or expect a lengthy wait for parties of four or more.

On the Menu

Most of the portions are tiny, but if you're hungry for a proper meal, there is usually at least one hearty, entree-sized meat selection, as well as a soup and a salad.

Parking

The rod-iron guarded Vons supermarket will tow cars without hesitation--opt for a meter along Vine after 7pm or along Melrose after 6pm.

Great hidden spot

Discovered this place a while back after reading a review in the LA Times. This place is classic LA-- a gem hidden in a totally nondescript strip mall next to a laundromat and a fried chicken takeout place. It has a very intimate vibe and you can tell right away they take the food and the wine seriously-- it reminds me of spots like Ino in NYC except the wine list is much deeper and the food is better. They don't take reservations and in prime hours it fills up fast, parking is limited and service can be spotty depending on who serves you-- not a great place to hit at 9pm on a Saturday night if you need an easy low pressure date spot. But overall it's definitely worth a visit.
