Rich in history, "The Lobster" stands as a tribute to the family that built its reputation. Established as a Lobster Shack in 1923, the remaining original structure within the foundation and walls of the main entrance and footprint still stand at the corner of Ocean Avenue and the Pier. "Established in 1923", recessed in the corner stone, greets guests in the spirit and heritage that only belongs to "The Lobster". The menu is classic American seafood featuring whole live Maine lobsters. Guests can sit at any seat in the restaurant or bar area and enjoy 180 degree views of the spectacular Pacific Ocean, accented by it's breathtaking sunsets, even celebrate the sea spun sunset phenomena called the 'Green Flash'. The terrace provides fresh coastal air for those who love to dine outdoors.
In Short
Southern California doesn't get any better than this--top-notch seafood and a 180-degree vista of ocean, beach and the twinkling Santa Monica pier. An L.A. landmark since 1923, this vintage "seafood shack" was remodeled in 1999 with a more luxe vibe. White tablecloths and candles lend sophistication to the airy room of glass walls and wood-beamed ceilings. The crowd is a mix of tourists, beachgoers, families and celebrating couples while the rocking patio bar seems to be where the locals hang. As for the food, the menu has all that's expected of a beachfront seafood spot, from Maine lobster and Manila clam chowder to seasonal fish and plenty of sides.

Know Before You Go

Walk-ins are accepted at the bar and on the open air patio--graze on generous appetizers that can easily be enough for dinner.

What to Drink

The Lobster's Claws are Good in a Pinch

Basically, I've only been to the Lobster when I've needed to go. That is, when I'm hungry in Santa Monica and don't have previous mealing arrangements. For an impromptu place, you could certainly do worse (though we're talking about a certain price point here--obviously you can knock yourself out at Del Taco or Mickey D's). The room is pleasant, with big windows floor-to-ceiling so you can watch people come and go on the Santa Monica Pier. The staff is knowledgeable and personable, and they have a pretty extensive wine list. Most of the food is standard fare expected from a seafood restaurant--ahi tuna tartare, fish, shrimp louie salad, and--as the name implies--lots of crustacean offerings (which I cannot eat, as I am allergic -- *sad clown*). My favorite dish is their mussels. I've also had good steaks there, and some pretty good salmon. We're essentially a step above McCormack 'n Schmick's (sp?) here. Oh, and if you drink martinis, they got my slightly dirty Ketel One job correct. Good on them for that!

View alone is worth an A...

I love the Lobster. When I first heard the name, I had bad tourist vibes in mind. Plus, the website is a little goofy, which put doubt in my mind. All that turned out to be false.

First, all the tourists are heading to Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory - it's hard to compete with the whole Forest Gump scenario. On top of that, the food is amazing. With a menu that changes daily, based upon seasonal produce and fish, you always have something new to try. The view is phenomenal, especially at sunset. It's worth it to just go for drinks and scenery. And the staff is great, have always had exceptional service.

Fresh fish!

On the left corner of the Santa Monica pier, it is perfectly placed to take a romantic stroll in the sand, walk along the pier, and ride the carosel before enjoying the view of the sun setting over the ocean. The drinks are tasty and the lobster is heavenly. It creates a great romantic feel without being overstuffy or pretensious.

finally, an oyster bar in LA

This is a great place in LA to enjoy solid seafood and a great view. It's set up right at the entrance to the pier and overlooks the beaches. Lots of aged wood interior and light colors. This is an ideal spot to wind down your day and take in the sunset.

Favorite

The Lobster is one of our favorite places in LA. If you get there around 5:00pm you get the sunset view. They have an array of different fish choices. The halibut is wonderfully prepared, and of course the lobster is to die for.

Santa Monica meets the Jersey Shore

Reminds me of being in Wildwood NJ- the Lobster offers interior elegance and allows the voyeurs an opportunity to look at the world through rose-colored glasses. If you are entertaining OFT guests, this is a great venue- Good for people-watching and a wonderful bar- The food is good- not exceptional but very good.

Don't walk, run to the Lobster-You'll love it!

Awesome!

The Lobster is a great restaurant! One would think its touristy due to its location (right next to the entrance of the Santa Monica Pier) but it couldn't be further from the truth! The food is exceptionally prepared and the views are awesome. I personally love going there for brunch on a gorgeous day...make a reservation though - it can get pretty packed on the weekends.
