Peruvian cuisine, latin lounge in SF
Conveniently located at 1815 Market Street between Valencia and Guerrero Streets, Destino hosts a warmly lit dining area and full bar. Their exclusive wine list features selections from South America, Spain, and California. Year after year, organizations and magazines give top honors to Destino for cuisine. The San Francisco Chronicle, 7X7, The New York Times, and Evening Magazine have all praised James and Destino. Active in the San Francisco community, Destino plays host to a range of social and charitable events and regularly participates in Dine About Town.
The Scene
An ornately carved-wood front door gives way to a long, dimly lit dining room painted in alluring reds and oranges. Long banquettes fill up with a good-looking crowd. Oversized mirrors hung along the walls give the impression of a much larger dining space. A grand iron chandelier adds to the restaurant's inviting romance.

The Food
Enticing interpretations of Peruvian and South American fare get the California treatment. To start, dip house-made tortilla chips into an oversized martini glass filled with plump tiger prawns blanketed in a warm, spicy tomato puree. Hearty dishes shine, such as spectacular baked rendition of beef chili relleno, which melds smoky chipotle salsa with tart citrus creme fraiche, and flaky, rich pork empanada served with cinnamon-flecked mojo sauce. Lighter dishes include an ahi tuna seviche. Lightly fried pumpkin doughnuts end the meal perfectly.
Save Money

A three-course prix-fixe menu is offered for $31.95 per person.

The Extras

Destino offers catering services and is available for special events.

What to Drink

Try a pisco sour, a national Peruvian drink made with a spirit much like brandy, without the oak aging.

Good but not amazing

I like Destino. They can accomodate a decent sized party of people. The staff is nice, the food and drinks are good. However their price to food awesome ratio is not great. If I could get out of here spending about $20 per person as opposed to about $50 I would love it beyond belief. But I've had $50 meals and this wasn't one of them.

The decor is nice. I didn't find it too loud. But since the plates are small, to get a good filling dinner you need to get a number of plates to be satisfied. And yes I know this is how a small plates place works, but this isn't as good as other places in town.

All that said if money isn't an issue at all. Go for it. You'll have a good meal in a nice atmosphere. Totally good for a first date.

Destined for Destino

What a surprise! I fantastic Peruvian restaurant on Market St!

The word is out, so be warned - you'll wait most of the night for your table - booking or not. Martuni's next door will more than make up for the wait, though.

It's also tiny, dark and noisy - not a place for older folk. Tall mirrors are suspended over head, and velvet curtains keep the cold out of the fornt door. Walls are blood red.

But the food, if you can stand to stay after these challenges, is divine. Truly topnotch. The ceviche sampler, plantains, duck breast with mofongo, and empanadas are all must-haves. So is the sangria. I finished the pitcher myself last time. The portions are so tiny I swear our waitor had a few bites on the way over.

One unisex bathroom at the back...wait and go at the next stop.

Of course, you'll pay for all this.
If you want the same food, without the genteel environment, might I suggest Cha Cha Cha?

On a final note, order a box of the dulce de lecce cookies to go, before you even sit down. I've waited twice before and been disappointed. This is one of the reasons you are eating there. Do not ask questions. Just do as I say.

The manager, did however, drop a box at my house as promised - two months later!

Top of Market Gem

Tucked away in a small, but lively space, Destino has the best ceviche in SF. Served in the Peruvian style, the different fish, spice combinations are sure to please. My favorite was the bass. The spot has an upscale Santerrria feel and is rich in saturated earth lones and luxe touches. The bar menu is tasty as well. Service is good, especially at balancing the small space vs. large amounts of people.
