Hungry patrons are unleashed to do their worst at Atlanta's first do-it-yourself stir-fry joint.
Atlanta's first create-your-own stir-fry restaurant, The Real Chow Baby, features over 70 of the very freshest ingredients and a state-of-the-art grill. At The Real Chow Baby you have the opportunity to make your own unique culinary creation with a delicious blend of Asian and American flavors that you choose yourself. Pick your rice, noodles, vegetables, meats, seafood and over 17 signature sauces. We serve both lunch and dinner and a flat price allows you unlimited trips to the stir fry bar.
The Scene
DIY stir-fry's universal appeal spreads to west Midtown. The sleek loft space, in the bottom of stylish apartments on Howell Mill, attracts Atlantans of all stripes: parents with toddlers in tow, first-date types nervously sipping specialty cocktails, good-looking 20-somethings as far as the eye can see. The stir-fry line, a buffet of raw ingredients from rice and snow peas to coconut curry sauce and fresh shrimp, moves surprisingly quickly, even with a large crowd.

The Food
Patrons line up, pile ingredients in a bowl, then hand it off. A cook stir-fries everything on a giant flat griddle, and a server delivers it to the table. While it's tempting to simply toss every available ingredient into your bowl, the results can be uneven. Thankfully, Chow Baby offers suggested combinations near the ingredients. The other route to success is to keep it simple: veggies, beef, teriyaki sauce, lo mein noodles.
Know Before You Go

Not to worry--if your first attempt at a culinary masterpiece falls flat, you can go back for a second try. And a third. It's all-you-can-eat.

What to Drink

Chow Baby has a great selection of specialty drinks and martinis. Try a Moscow Mule, a Part Time Lover or a Frozen Honey Colada.

Hit me, Baby, one more time

Atlanta’s favorite destination for create-your-own stir-fry dinners, The Real Chow Baby opens a second location in Cobb Galleria Mall this week on Aug. 20. The original on Howell Mill Road is stellar for filling up on fresh ingredients, feeling in control of your destiny, feeding pregnancy cravings and hosting rockin’ birthday dinners.

Warning: Closed for Lunch on Weekends

When you get a craving for Chow Baby, there's little you can do for substitution. And when you get it on the weekend, you better hope that it's near dinnertime: Chow Baby is closed for lunch on weekends. The popular hot spot also packs a serious weekend crowd. If you want to eat within 30 minutes of arrival, arrive before 5 p.m. on a Friday or Saturday.

A place to create your own masterpieces or disasters.

People I now either love this place or hate it. The ones who don't like to cook usually will stay clear of this spot. Fortunately for me I like to put together food and experiment with cooking. My issues with the place is the layout, the noise factor and the issue with food quality. I am personally leery of food, especially raw meat which is left in the open. I suppose they have addressed those concerns but I still have them in the back of my head.

How it works is that you wait in line, choose from either rice or noodles, vegetables, sauces, toppings at finally the meat. Once you have everything set up and ready. You present the bowls to the cooks who prepare them via Mongolian style stir fry. If you are lucky and follow some of the card descriptions, you can create a pretty unique dish. The good part is, you can revisit the line as many times as you want.

The service is decent and the restaurant rates a thumbs up on the cleanliness factor. My personal concerns are the noise level, layout of the dining area and potential quality of the food.

The Food And Service

The food and service is great. To identify your food you have your own stick to put in the food and you can put any name you want such as, your real name, nickname, or fantasy names. The staff are friendly and have no problem with anything you ask them. Also all the food is stir-fried and you can go up and pick exactly what you want on it meats veggies and oils. They also have color coded sticks at the beginning of the line to choose if you want something extra such as, shrimp, a soup, or a mexican flatbread to roll up your food in. Also they have chopsticks so if you are the type of person who likes to eat with chopsticks can eat with them! If you are the type of person who would like to try to eat with chopsticks but don't know how , they have pre-made chopsticks so you only have to push them together and pick up your food. Also they make drinks that you order right at the bar. For example I ordered a Shirley Temple and they made it fast but good and plus I think that they give FREE refills.
This was one of the best restaurant I have been to so far I give a A+

When you dont really know what you want to eat...

...Chow Baby is the spot. For the Northerners, its BD's Mongolian BBQ minus the show. You pick your ingredients, they cook it up. This location is fairly good. Its on the more desolate end of Howell Mill, south of the shopping plazas, a block north of 10th street. Not sure about parking. Pricing is great, lunch is better but dinner is more than affordable. The crowd can be a bit much some nights but the ambiance usually makes up for it. Good food spot.

Half The Fun Is Picking Out Your Food...

My family loves to get together and eat and try new places. My brother put me up on this spot when we all went out for his birthday. I have to admit that half of the experience is picking out the different ingredients for your meal. Mixing and matching different meats, veggies, herbs, seasonings, sauces and then they cook (stir-fry) it up and bring it to you. It's an all you can eat spot but be careful one of the mistakes many make the first time is trying to cram everything in on the first go round. then they try to go up again and don't have the room. Try a few things and save the rest for the next trip. Great for the whole family.
It's been a few months since I've been there but just writing these words I think I'm going to call my brother and were going to take the wives this week/ weekend!
