A "gourmet" homestyle menu includes artisanal baked goods, heaping bowls of oatmeal and granola, hot soups, pot pies, pressed sandwiches, and plenty of salads and snacks.

Sort of a scene, but a cute place!

I've been here a few times, with friends and on dates, and it's cute. It's a good place to sit and enjoy a drink of a coffee and chat! I really like the open-air feel of it, too.

I had a really good cheese plate once, and they've got a lot of other things I'd like to try. I wish I couldn't remember the exact cheeses we got, but I liked them a lot. Cheese makes me happy.

The staff has always been very nice every time I've been here, too!

inconsistency.

though the grove is a cozy cafe (when it's not crowded) that has deliciously sweet chais, fresh orange juice, and a decent selection of wine and beer, i have a couple of gripes w/this establishment.

the food is terribly inconsistent. the vegetarian chili was fantastic the first time, and pretty bland the second time. w/regards to the breakfast items, my first experience warranted no complaints, but the second time is a different story. my bacon and toast were chewy, the poached eggs looked like tiny turds, and the garlic potatoes were very bland. the presentation was pretty sad too. not a great way to start out the day.

one chilly evening, stephen and i sat by the open front door, letting in a biting draft, along w/a smoke trail that came from a few patrons who were seated outside. when i inquired if the door could be closed b/c of the cold and the smoke, the waitress told me that they had to 'keep it open for circulation.' odd that the door closed as people started to file in over time. ...yeah, i don't get that one either.

Where you can feel all of the charm of a woodsy ski lodge without freezing

I love this cafe. Me and upper Fillmore, we're not always pals. However the Grove is worth weathering the nouveau riche and the yuppies for the great atmosphere, super nice staff and tasty food.

Nice rich wood walls. Well priced red wines. A chicken pot pie that is to die for. Cafe sized tables good to sit and write at, leather couches near a fireplace, and free wifi. I usually go here at night to write and enjoy the candlelit woodsy feel and work on writing with either a great coffee drink or a glass of wine.

oh my goodness i hate this place

when i think of "scene-y" i think of the grove. i guess it's my fault for living in pac heights, where scenes abound but c'mon people. the food is not that great and it's way overpriced. the mimosas are fresh and large, yes, but also way overpriced.
they always forget my food or my drinks and now i just don't go there any more - but here's the real kicker:

one time a friend and i brought some bagels, ordered mimosas and sat outside. a few minutes later we got snarkily "asked" to either leave, and eat the bagels, or put the bagels away and finish the mimosas. i don't have a problem with no outside food (ok, i do, but that's not the point here). if you have a policy, you have a policy. but you don't have to be such a jackass when you ask us to not eat there. geez. i've never gone back and i tell everyone this story so they'll no how ridiculous this place is.

sure it has outdoor seating but that's not near enough of a reason to go.

Just as good as the other Grove!

This place rocks as much as it's cousin on Chestnut. Truthfully, I'm not sure which one came first...

The Grove is a San Francisco institution. And the only place I think is equally adored by the singletons and their married/coupled friends.

I love Saturday mornings at The Grove for the mix of people languishing on it's mismatched seats. Toddlers, kids, golden oldies, hippies and yippies prop themselves on ski lift benches, rocking chairs, wobbly knotted tables and stained sofas. The fireplaces are a magnet during the cooler seasons - just about every month in SF barring September! Most tables are occupied by squatters and their laptops, but other tables open up fast enough. But it's just as good on a weeknight.

I love peoplewatching and Fillmore Street is as richly, fertile as any other SF location.

I have an ongoing love affair with Dave's Downfall: an english muffin, with two poached eggs, bacon, avo and parmesian cheese sauce on the side. They just discontinued this in it's concentrated form, and have incorporated spinach and tomato, via some other theme, but I can guess it'd be just as good.

The fresh OJ is exactly that: fresh, and oversized. They make it as you order it. The salads, soups, mac 'n cheese using four different types of cheese, chile con carne, jumbo creamy chai tea...it's all good.

The staff are friendly, and helpful, and if you're lucky, you can get a table in the sun, to admire the passing poodles and their pets. Service is self-help at the counter for odreding, and collecting drinks, although they'll bring your plate to you when it's ready. Great for a weekend laze-fest.
