The Scene
Chic young Chicagoans flock to this energetic, clubby restaurant, whose blend of pulsing salsa rhythms and Asian influence is already a hit in New York and Miami. The cavernous room is divided into several areas, each with its own over-the-top personality: from a sleek, circular front sushi bar to the "mod pit"--a sunken red-leather alcove with plum shag carpeting and glittery hanging beads. Service is generally smart, fast and friendly.

The Food
Japanese-Brazilian fusion food could easily be a mess of mismatched flavors and textures, but the extensive menu of Asian-tinged seviches, spicy sushi rolls and artfully presented small plates makes you wonder why no one thought of it before. Tuna sashimi seviche with orange and jalapeno is succulent and spicy-sweet; Samba Rio roll stuffed with shredded guava-glazed short ribs and sweet pepper is simply inspired. Finish with fresh fruit and yogurt, or moist, rich tres leite cake, each a scrumptious ending.
Look Good

Sneak up to the mezzanine lounge for a bird's-eye view of the action.

Parking

Valet parking is offered in front of the building. There are also two parking lots a block away at Hubbard and Wells.

Save Money

Daily 11:45am-3:30pm, get bento box specials with sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, miso soup and seasonal field greens for $15-$20.

What to Drink

Specialty cocktails include mojitos, caipirinhas and creative martinis; sake and wine lists are extensive and not terribly overpriced, with several bottles in the $30-$40 range.

Where to Sit

Sit at a perimeter table for prime people-watching. Communal tables are cramped, with back-less stools that make for a sore back. At night, head to the rooftop lounge for a cocktail.

Too expensive, but has its benefits

I won't be as critical as most of the other reviewers, but I definitely do get where they're coming from. I may have had better experiences here because I've only been for lunch and after-work drinks (never for dinner when it was crowded) so things weren't quite as chaotic as people have made it sound. I will say, though, that you're probably better off forgetting about the "sushi" and sticking with the "samba rio". The sushi is forgettable (especially with much better sushi places like sushi wabi and japonais nearby) but I've had a few really memorable brazilian/japanese fusion dishes here. The chicken teriyaki dish on their lunch menu (not your typical teriyaki, and much more exciting than it sounds) is actually VERY good, and the potatoes it comes with (they're purple for some reason?) are really tasty.
The bar also has a really great Brazilian drink--I can't remember what it's called, but it has muddled fruit in it-- and I'd definitely recommend stopping by after work one day and giving it a try!

If I wanted a nightclub I would go to Excalibur.

I am a huge fan of eating out but not of nightclubs. I love being able to talk to the people I am with and Sushi Samba doesn't allow that. They seem to have the idea that I am a vapid diner who just wants to party and be some socialite which I find insulting at best. The waitstaff is stuck up and the atmosphere looks like a South Beach night club NOT a restaurant.

On top of it this place is expensive and they barely give you any food! I would expect at least some high quality lobster when I ordered the lobster sushi but it was rubbery and I only got three pieces for 20 bucks!

My friends and I were so hungry after we ate here we ended up going down the street to McDonald's in our nice dresses to get some fries so we could feel full. And to tell you the truth, the McDonald's fries were the same quality as the sushi at Samba.

sexy, trendy dining

for the money and quality, I'd prefer to eat my sushi elsewhere.

for the pure sexy after work drinking and mingling, there's probably not a better place on Wells Street, if you want to be where the image aware are single and mingle.

I went here on a first date a few years ago and thought the food was good. Probably because the boy was cute.

When I came back a few years later, I'm not sure it was my imagination but I thought the quality of food had fallen off.

I personally feel this place should or could evolve into a lounge experience where they serve small plates and that way it would take the focus off the food.

awesome as an afterwork night spot.

It's, like, ironic or something?

Don’t be fooled by the name – the sushi’s mediocre at best. The triple fusion (that would be Japanese-Peruvian-Brazilian) warm plates, though, prove redeeming. Go for the moqueca mista, skip the maki.

After the first time I went here I said, " I don't think I will come back here.
" I went back, for the second time in January and should have listened to myself!
This place is VERY expensive. There is a lot on the menu, I can't remember specifically, but there is something for everyone. There is not, however, that big of a selection of sushi. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to choose from, but I was under the impression that is was a straight up sushi place. The sushi is good- but for the price, it's not worth it. Not even a little. I have no problem paying extra for quality food, but this just isn't worth it.

The atmosphere is fun, so there is some appeal to it. But, I can't really have THAT much fun paying $15 for a glass of wine. I know things are pricier downown, but again, I will pay for something that is worth it.

I love sushi and it's my goal to try close to every sushi place in Chicago, this was another on the list. In comparison, there is much better sushi out there that is worth every penny. Worth it enough that you will order two of the same rolls because it's so good.

Also, for the prices you pay, you would expect stellar service. Well, don't. They either ignore you or they stalk you, there really hasn't been a middle ground for me in that respect.
