The Scene
Perched above a runway at the Santa Monica airport, the interior pays homage to Himalayan pilots with an illuminated glass etching of the mountain range dwarfing a tiny plane running the length of the sushi bar.

The Food
Ultra-fresh raw fish is the main draw at the Hump. Start with knockout morsels of sashimi. Toro (fatty tuna), red snapper and hamachi (yellowtail) are paired perfectly with ingredients like Japanese peppers, cilantro, garlic or sea salt. Perfect bites of nigiri sushi are also sublime. For those who prefer their food cooked, the kitchen turns out swoon-worthy hot specials like a fried soft-shell crab with sauteed vegetables and meltingly rich baked eggplant stuffed with sweet miso.
The Extras

Typhoon, the Hump's sister restaurant downstairs, serves Pan-Asian cuisine, including insects and other creepy crawlies.

Serious eaters only and with seriously deep pockets.

This is one of the best kept secrets in LA restaurants, especially for sushi lovers. Located in the Santa Monica airport, The Hump offers each patron views of private planes taking off and landing while providing a second attraction – the expertise of the sushi chefs. Be prepared to be mesmerized by how fresh the fish because it was most likely flown in from Japan or Hawaii that day! This restaurant is not for people who think California rolls are traditional sushi or don’t know what Omakase means. If you’re looking for a deal, don’t come here. You get what you pay for and at The Hump…delicious food at a fair price.

don't be fooled by the name

among the best and most impressively presented sushi in LA, but not for the squeamish: highest-end fish are still flopping while you eat them, and lobster looks on mournfully as you sip its soup. The setting is unique and intimate and a real bonus if you like airplanes and old-school airports. Highly recommended for sushi lovers.
